Patient Instructions

  1. That the success of surgery depends not only on the team of doctors who performed your surgery but also in your careful understanding of your condition and cooperation
  2. After spine surgery you need to take care of your back for the rest of your life
  3. If you are overweight – weight reduction is a must – you may not get better otherwise
  4. If you smoke, chew tobacco or consume zarda ,etc – You will never get better
  5. If you are a Diabetic- absolute control of diabetes is a must
  6. Always use a western style toilet
  7. You will be taught a set of exercises which you can start in 4 to 6 weeks’ time
  8. Do not sit for prolonged periods- get up every 20 minutes, walk for a few minutes before sitting again.
  9. Do not bend and lift weights
  10. Occasional tingling, electric shock like sensations and numbness, pain along the leg will settle slowly and in some patients may take up to 8-12 months depending on the duration of symptoms before surgery i.e, the longer the duration of symptoms or delay to surgery the longer it would take for the nerves to recover.
  11. Eat a healthy diet. You can eat rice, dals etc. If you are a diabetic or suffer from other medical disorders- follow your physician’s advice regarding diet
  12. Exposure to sunlight for at least half hour in the morning is essential

Given the nature of the surgery, it isn’t pain-free. However, following your doctor’s instructions post-surgery can surely help foster a smooth recovery at home
  1. Always turn to one side and while getting up from bed
  2. You may experience dizziness whilst getting up from bed for a few days. Be careful and don’t be in a hurry. Sit for a few seconds, stand for a few seconds and once you feel OK then start walking.
  3. Do not bend or lift anything heavy.
  4. Do not sit for more than 15 minutes at stretch for 6 weeks from date of surgery
  5. You will be given a brace after surgery and will have to wear it for 12 months. You can remove the brace whilst having a shower for about 10-15 minutes in the morning and for about 10-15 minutes in the evening. You must sleep with the brace on.
  6. You can attend school /college 2 months from date of surgery
  7. You are not allowed to play contact sports or ride a bicycle for one year after surgery. Although you can start swimming 6 months after surgery but after consulting your doctor. Diving- however is not allowed.
  8. Please get up every 20 minutes or between classes while attending school.
  9. Do not sit on the floor/ground for one year
  10. It is common to experience some pain and discomfort for a few weeks after surgery- Take painkillers when necessary, as prescribed by the doctor
  11. Maintain a healthy weight. Have frequent but small quantities of food. There is no food restriction as such. Eat a healthy diet consisting of fruits/pulses/vegetables etc.
  12. Do not wear synthetic clothes over the POP jacket / brace. Wear light cotton to help aerate the back region.
